Environmental Science Syllabus

Instructor: Mr. Stephen R. Joyner
Required Texts: Biology, Kenneth R. Miller and Joseph Levine,Prentice-Hall Publishing
Environmental Science is the study of the components of our surroundings, both living and nonliving, and the interactions of these components. This course is designed to help you gain a greater understanding of many of the more specific concepts incorporated in this broad definition, including air, water, soil, geology, human ecology, succession, and our relationships as humans to the components of this environment.
The study of the environment is not cut-and-dried. It is instead very dynamic, subject to opinion and heated debate, new interpretations, and often, misleading information. This year is an attempt to help you sort out all the different aspects of this topic.

Below are listed my expectations of you as a student in my class. Please read them carefully.
Behaviors:
1.      Come into class to have fun learning
2.      Come into class get your folder, book, sit down, and be quiet proving you are ready to learn.
3.      Do not talk when instruction is going on.
4.      Raise your hand during instruction if you have a question.
5.      Please feel free to participate.
Material
This list of materials is what I feel is necessary for you to do well in this class. You may not use every item every day, but it is a good idea to keep them on hand for when you do:
1.      Textbook (provided in class)
2.      Personal folder (provided in class)
3.      Pencil or a pen (black or blue ink)

Furniture, Materials, and Equipment
You can choose your own seats as long as you don’t disturb anyone else’s ability to learn in the class. If you have problems in your seat, or if you cause anyone else problems, I will move you as necessary.
Materials and equipment are off limits unless, and until, I let you use something.
Assessments
            Quizzes
You will be given a quiz covering the vocabulary for each chapter covered in this class.  Each vocabulary quiz will be worth 100 points.
Tests
A test will cover the material from one chapter. The format is 30-70 questions consisting of multiple choice, and true or false, followed by one or two essay questions. Each chapter test will be worth 100 points.
Field Trips
Field trips will be offered at various times through the quarter.  They will most often be to local sites and will involve practical applications of the concepts and information presented in the classroom.
Grading
Grades are assessed each marking period, but are cumulative throughout each quarter. The sum of points the student earned for all assignments over the marking period is compared to the sum of total points possible. This is expressed as a percentage. The categories of assignments are given below:
Chapter Vocabulary test       100 points
Chapter test                           100 points
Chapter Power Point              100 points
Chapter Lab                           100 points
